Before beginning your loc journey, pause for a moment and ask yourself,  “Why do I want to start this?”

Your “why” is your anchor. It’s what will hold you steady through every stage, the budding, the frizz, the waiting, the learning, and the growth. Your “why” is your motivation, your truth, your reminder that this journey is about more than hair. It’s about you.

For many, the “why” begins with freedom. freedom from the constant maintenance, the long hours spent styling, or the endless search for the next “perfect” product. It’s the desire to wake up and go! get ready and move through the day without stress or self-doubt.

For others, the “why” comes from frustration and exhaustion, the cycle of braiding, installing extensions, taking them out, and starting all over again. The pain of tight styles, the financial burden of buying hair, paying to install it, and then paying again to remove it. Sometimes it feels like throwing time, energy, and money into the trash.

Then there’s the product struggle, the endless cycle of buying and trying. Cabinets and drawers filled with gels, creams, oils, waxes, sprays, and serums —all promising shine, hold, or growth. One week you hear this product is a must-have; the next week, you hear it’s harmful. The constant switching, mixing, and spending can become overwhelming. Few people stop to think about what all those chemicals are really doing, not just to the hair, but to the scalp and even the spirit.

And sometimes, despite all the effort, it still doesn’t come together. You take the time, you try your best, you style, you adjust, you redo and still, the result isn’t what you wanted. You look in the mirror and sigh, not because you don’t love your hair, but because it feels like a constant uphill battle. Yet, you have to walk out the door anyway, carrying that frustration with you. It’s tiring.

Some people reach a point where they simply want to stop. To let go of the clutter, the chemicals, and the confusion. They want their hair to breathe, to grow, and to exist in its natural state, free, unforced, and authentic.

Your “why” might also come from a desire for healing. To restore damaged strands, to recover edges lost to tension or stress, to find balance again. Or maybe it’s about self-acceptance and peace. The realization that you are enough just as you are, and that your natural hair is beautiful in every stage.

For some, the “why” runs even deeper. Locs can be a spiritual or cultural connection, a symbol of heritage, pride, and identity. A statement of belonging, strength, and reverence for the roots that came before us.

Whatever your reason is, honor it. Let it be yours. Write it down. Keep it close. Because your “why” will guide you when your patience is tested and remind you of the beauty behind your decision.

Your “why” is not just the first step of your loc journey, it is the foundation that will carry you through it.
